Q: How can we turn the water OFF or ON remotely?
- On the AKWA Concierge app, from the “SUMMARY”, click on the building first
- On the “BUILDING STATUS” page, click on the address
- The STATUS of the valve, OPEN or CLOSE, is indicated under the icons
- To close or open the valve, click on the blue button I / 0
- The system will ask you to confirm your choice
Q: In case we have some plumbing work to do in our property, how do we turn off the water?
During work do not close the AKWA Technologies Master valve. Make sure the water is shut-off with the manual valve on the main water line.
Q: An alarm occurs, what should we do?
The first step is to check on the Water Alarm controller display where you will have a message. Example: “AL 2” which means Alarm in zone 2. You can press the “Reset” button to stop the sound of the alarm. If a water puddle is still present, the beeping sounds stops but the valve will not reopen, and the display will still show an alarm.
The second step is to locate and clean up the puddle, making sure the Wireless leak sensor is dry. Then you can press the “Reset” button again. At this point, the “AL 2” message will disappear and the valve will automatically reopen.
Q: Can we have a false alarm?
The AKWA Technologies system has a unique “Smart Alarm algorithm” to detect and avoid false alarms. Example with a wet mop touching a sensor. Under 4 seconds of water contact, the system will understand if it’s a real or false alarm. It will start to close the system first but it will reopen it immediately if it’s not a real water leak (water will still be running).
Q: What happens if the power goes off? Will we still have water?
In case of a power failure, a rechargeable battery will allow the use of water and manage risks for up to 6 hours. If the power failure lasts longer, the system will close the valve for security reasons. If you require water, you can reopen the valve manually.
Q: Does the system measure the water flow?
Yes, if the Flow sensor is installed, the system will show the water usage.
Q: Does the system supervise temperature?
Yes, the Master valve includes a temperature sensor which will detect the freezing point.
We also have some Wireless leak sensors that include temperature monitoring.
Q: Can the AKWA Technologies system works with other home automation systems?
The AKWA Technologies system could send the notifications to different home automation systems. The layout will depend on the automation system already installed.
CONNECTIVITY AND NOTIFICATIONS
Q: What do I need to do to get the notifications?
You need to provide the installer with your email and your cell phone number.
Q.: We just moved in our new condo and your AKWA Technologies system is installed. What do we need to do to get connected and receive the notifications?
You need to contact your reseller and he will provide you with the procedure to follow.
Q: Do I need the Wi-Fi to receive the notifications?
Yes, the system needs the Wi-Fi for notifications and alarm reporting only. It does not need the Wi-Fi to be fully functional.
Q: For the notifications, can we add more than one email or user?
Yes, you can add more than one email or user.
Q: In case of a leak, is it possible to receive a notification by text message and also by email?
Yes, you can receive notifications both by both text message and email.
Q: Does the Wi-Fi needs to be left on when away on vacation in order to use the system remotely?
If it is a Wi-Fi system that was installed, the Wi-Fi needs to be on in order to control the system remotely and to receive notifications. The system will function fully without an active Wi-Fi, however you will not receive notifications.
Q: I’ve received those notifications. What do they mean?
The main notifications are:
AL + zone number = Alarm zone “X”. The sensor triggered an alarm from zone “X”.
cF + zone number = Lost of signal zone “X”.
Lb + zone number = Weak battery zone “X”. The battery needs to be replaced.
IT + zone number = Alarm zone “X”. The sensor has been moved from his original position.
LL = low temperature for the valve only
Lo = low temperature for the sensors only
FL = Flow timer alert. You will get a notification and/or the valve will shut off automatically if the water keeps running after a predetermined delay.
Trouble = The valve is not completely closing or opening. Call the technical support team.
Q: I received a cF (communication failure) notification, but the batteries are new. What should I do?
There are 2 types of communication failure:
1) One of the sensors is no longer communicating with the controller. The display will show cF + the appropriate zone number.
2) The controller is no longer communicating with the AKWA Concierge dashboard. You will receive a notification either by email or by Text message but the display of the controller won’t show any code.
Action to take:
- Check that nothing is obstructing the signal (metal etc.), which may cause interferences.
If necessary, review the positioning of the sensor.
If necessary, review the positioning of the sensor.
- Check if the sensor is still functional by using a metal device to connect with the two pins.
- Replace the battery: some new batteries may be defective from the factory.
Q: An alarm occurred and I didn’t receive any notification on my phone.
There are two reasons why you are not receiving text messages:
1- You have stopped the alarm before the system can send the notification (within 5 minutes).
2- Your cellular provider or your set-up blocks unrecognized text messages. We have no control over this issue.
Q: Why did I received a lost signal notification with so much delay, to mention that the Wi-Fi is not functioning?
We send a notification about the loss of Wi-Fi after 96h only because you can have intermittent network cuts and we don’t want to send many notifications. The system is still fully functional without the Wi-Fi connection.
Q: Do we receive a notification if the valve does not close, open properly or get stuck?
Yes, you will receive a notification by Text message or email with the word “Trouble”. On the controller the “Close” red light will keep flashing.
Q: What is LoRa?
LoRa is a wireless technology that offers long range, low power and secure data transmission for M2M and IoT applications. With the LoRa technology we are able to offer an independent, reliable wireless signal with a 6km range. This is ideal to ensure the continuity of the system without relying on the homeowner’s Wi-Fi network.
Q: How does the LoRa receiver works?
The Lora receiver is connected to one dedicated central Wi-Fi (one Wi-Fi per building, provided by the building management). The homeowner Wi-Fi is never use with a LoRa set-up and is not required to send notifications to homeowners.
QUESTIONS BY PRODUCTS
CONTROLLER
Q: What codes may appear on the controller display in the event of an issue?
Those are the main codes (you will get a notification as well):
Call the technical support.
Q: On the controller we have two blue LEDs indicators that are “ON” at all times. What does it mean?
It is normal to have these two lights on at all times. It simply shows that the system works and is operational. The left led light indicates the valve is fully open and the right led light indicates that the electricity is working.
Q: There is a red LED flashing on the display, what does it mean?
It is normal to have the red-light flashing. It indicates the system is connected to the Wi-Fi or LoRa.
VALVE
Q: How do we turn the water OFF / ON manually through the AKWA Technologies system and can we do it remotely?
To shut-off the water manually, you have a few options:
- Press the “close valve” button on the Water Alarm controller,
- Use the Remote control,
- Close the valve from the AKWA Concierge app. (see the procedure under “General questions”).
Q: Can we install more than one valve?
Yes, it is possible to have more than one valve per Water Alarm controller, as long as the distance between them is no greater than two meters. The Master valve needs to be wired with the controller. It will work with one Master valve and the other Slave valves connected to it.
Q: How can we reopen the valve after a leak has been detected?
Locate the puddle first and once the water leak issue is resolved, ensure the Wireless leak sensor is completely dry. Then you can press the RESET button to reopen the system. The message on the Water Alarm controller display will disappear and the valve will automatically reopen.
The system will not reopen if the sensor is still wet. Sometimes you need to reboot the system and generate an alarm by connecting the two metal pins of the sensor together (with a metal device) in order to get the system to function again.
Q: Can I do a remote reset from my smart phone?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to do a remote “Reset” for an alarm, false or not.
Q: We had a leak and dried the Wireless leak sensor. The valve remains closed, what should we do?
Take the sensor which triggered the alarm and touch the two pins at the bottom of this sensor with a metal device, such as a screwdriver or a key. An alarm must be created to make a signal return to the sensor. Never remove the battery if it is not necessary to change it. The system cannot “reset” without a battery.
Q: I’ve pressed on “Reset” and the valve stays close, what should I do?
- Go to the controller and unplug the power cord.
- Slide the toggle switch to the off position.
- Wait a few seconds and plug the power cord back in.
- Turn the toggle switch back to the on position.
Q: Do we receive a notification if the valve does not close, open properly or get stuck?
Yes, you will receive a notification by Text message or email with the word “Trouble”. On the controller the “Close” red light will keep flashing.
WIRELESS LEAK SENSORS
Q: Why do we need Wireless leak sensors?
Sensors are essential to determine precisely where and when a leak occurs. As we know where the water leak happens, it helps to act quickly and solve the issue before it becomes a real big problem.
Q: How many leak detection sensors can we install with one system and is it possible to add some after the installation? Can we install the sensors ourselves?
You can have up to 79 Wireless leak sensors, 10 Vacancy sensors and 10 Remote controls. The system also permits one Wired sensor and one Flow sensor per Water Alarm controller. Sensors must be installed by certified installers for our AKWA Technologies system only.
Q: Where should the leak detection sensors be installed?
The leak detection sensors are installed where you have running water (example: toilets, sinks, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, water tank). The Flow sensor would be installed next to the Master valve. A Vacancy sensor is typically installed in the highest traffic area of the property.
Q: How much water must be present for a sensor to detect a water leak?
A single water drop is enough for the system to detect water. Once the two metal pins of the sensor make contact with the water, the sensor will trigger an alarm and close the valve immediately. The smart algorithm will detect if it’s a real or false alarm (calculated under 4 seconds) and then keep the valve close or not, depending on the result.
Q: If a Wireless leak sensor gets submerged completely is it still functional?
If the Wireless leak sensor is submerged in water for a short period of time it will still be functional after being dried-up. If the sensor is completely submerged, it will not be salvageable.
Q: How can we test a Wireless leak sensor to see if it is functioning?
Touch the two pins at the bottom of the Wireless leak sensor with a metal device (such as a screwdriver or a key) to trigger an alarm. A signal from the sensor will be sent to the controller and you will see the “AL + zone number” appearing on the controller’s display.
DETECTION RULER
Q: What is the purpose of a Detection ruler compare to a Perimeter cable?
A Detection Ruler works in a similar way as a Perimeter cable. The difference is mainly regarding the ruler shape which is more practical to use in certain places as it is flat. It will detect water on its complete length and on both sides. Similar to the Perimeter cable, it comes in different sizes: 12” and 20”. Since its development, we prefer the Detection ruler over the Perimeter cable, except for specific applications.
Q: Where do you usually install a Detection ruler?
We typically install a Detection Ruler under the Dishwasher, the washing machine and a fridge.
VACANCY SENSOR
Q: Where should I install the Vacancy sensor?
The ideal zone to install the Vacancy sensor is typically the highest traffic area of the property (kitchen, hallway). In properties with more than one level, we recommend one Vacancy sensor per floor for ideal coverage.
Q: How does the Vacancy sensor works with a small pet?
Small pets won’t trigger the Vacancy sensor.
Q: How long does it takes for the Vacancy sensor to reopen the valve when I am back at home?
As soon as the sensor detects your presence, the valve will reopen instantaneously.
Q: How does the Vacancy sensor differentiate between someone leaving the residence and someone going to another part of the property (example: if you go to bed)?
The Vacancy sensor is based on a timer and needs to be installed in a place where you know you will pass by in the laps of time predetermined. If there are no movements captured by the Vacancy sensor for the preset period (Example 12 hours) it will shut-off the water by closing the valve.
As soon as a motion is detected, the Vacancy sensor reopens the valve immediately. The preset time needs to be adjusted to your needs. It is usually programmed for 12 hours.
FLOW SENSOR
Q: How does the Flow sensor work? Is it a turbine system?
The Flow sensor is a turbine and any slight movement will be detected. A timer is programmed depending on your environment, from one minute to 60 minutes. The normal set-up is 15 minutes minimum. If the water runs for more than 15 minutes, it will send a notification to the owner and if programmed accordingly, it can also close the Master valve. Water leaks are detected with the sensors, except for the internal “invisible” leaks, which are detected by constant water running with the Flow sensor. Parameters can be changed: timer, alarm and action types.
Q: How can I follow my Water usage and how does it work?
The Flow sensor can be reprogrammed to indicate the usage either by liter or gallon. The usage is indicated on the AKWA Concierge app.
BATTERIES:
Q: What types of batteries does the system use?
The Wireless leak sensors uses Lithium AAA batteries. The Vacancy sensor uses AA’s and the Remote control is a 12v battery.
Q: How long does the batteries last?
The average lifespan is between 3 and 5 years. The system will notify you when the batteries are low and need to be replaced.
Q: What is the procedure to change a battery in a sensor?
Type A sensor:
Remove the lid by pressing the finger sized grooves located on both sides of the Wireless leak sensor and lifting up. Insert the battery (+ on +, – on -) and note the red light inside the sensor is flashing. Once the flash stops, close the lid.
Type B sensor:
Remove the back lid of the sensor by using a small Philip type of screwdriver. Insert the battery (+ on +, – on -). Close back the lid.
Q: Can we replace the rechargeable battery in the Water Alarm controller?
Rechargeable batteries will last over 15 years. They can be replaced if necessary.
Q: Does the system has a battery backup?
Yes, there is a rechargeable battery inside the Water Alarm controller. In case of a power failure this battery will allow the use of water and manage risks for up to 6 hours. If the power failure last longer, the system will close the valve for security reasons. If you require water, you can open the valve manually.
